Franz Schubert: King of the Leider
Today we have pop music. Back in the early 1800s in Europe, there were Lieder, which meant âsongs.â Like todayâs pop songs, Lieder sang about romantic love. The master of the Lieder is considered to be Franz Peter Schubert (1797 â 1824.) Although he died at the young age of 31, he wrote over 600 known Lieder as well as nine symphonies. Born in Vienna, he began learning the violin and piano at five and was accepted into the prestigious Imperial and Royal City College, where he began composing. One of his teachers was Antonio Salieri, blamed in popular culture for the death of Mozart. Like Mozart, Schubert died young and impoverished due to syphilis. More info: Franz Schubert
